Titre - The Education of the Diabetic
Description de la création - Based on 30 years of
experience as a type 1 diabetic, the author analyses the evolution of
her relationship with diabetes from the perspective of enaction, as
developed by Masciotra, Roth and Morel (Enaction: Toward a Zen Mind in
Learning and Teaching, Sense Publishers, 2007). The experience of
learning to live with diabetes is presented as a transition from a
relationship of symbiosis to one of exteriority and finally to
interiority. Since diabetes is a chronic illness in which it is the
patient, not the doctor, who carries the major responsibility for its
management, the education of the diabetic is of paramount importance. In
contrast to traditional “transmission” models of education, which
separate knowledge from experience and learning from doing, Enaction
provides an ideal theoretical and epistemological framework for
designing a personalized education program for diabetics centered on
their own lived experience and the real-life situations that confront
them on a daily basis.
